The original concept for Alphabet Soup was invented by Anthony Schubert,
and implemented for IRC by Kenrick J. Mock
and Michelle Hoyle. The Talk City implementation was
created by Kenrick Mock.)
Your job, in one minute or less, is to make the funniest and most
original phrase for a random acronym 3-7 letters long.
Alphabet Soup is hosted by a bot named AlphaBot 24 hours a day.
The game begins with the bot presenting the acronym, for example,
"MTG". Your answer must be a series of words that begins with
the letters M, T, and G. For example, "Meatwhiz Tastes
Great!" would be a valid answer, along with "Mister
T's Groovy!". You have 60 seconds to think up your
phrase.
Next, the bot will present the collected answers and you are
given a short amount of time to vote (privately) for the one you
think is best. You are not allowed to vote for your own answer.
Finally, AlphaBot will list each answer and tell you how many
votes they received. The first player to reach 30 points wins.
Throughout the game, AlphaBot will tell you what you need to do.
If you watch for his messages, then you will have no problems
playing. In general, you will be sending answers to the bot through
private messages ("PMs" or "one to ones"). Java client users should
get a PM window opened when they join the game.
Note: We have more than one game of Alphabet Soup
running at the same time. If you are playing in chat room #abc2
instead of #abc, then the bot will be named AlphaBot2. Please
substitute AlphaBot2 in all the interactions below.
So, when AlphaBot asks for your answer, if you have a private
message window open to him, simply type it in. Otherwise,
you can use the /msg command to send it:
In both cases, your 'answer' should be words of your choosing
that match the acronym.
The following is a short game transcript. Private messages to
and from AlphaBot from the player are in red.
The text the player entered is in bold:
<AlphaBot> A new round
is beginning! Everyone must send me your answer in a private message
(Talkie).
<AlphaBot> The acronym for this round is: M T G -->AlphaBot
MeatWhiz Tastes Great! AlphaBot-> Your answer of: 'MeatWhiz
Tastes Great!' has been registered.
<AlphaBot> Answer 1 received!
<AlphaBot> Answer 2 received!
<AlphaBot> ***Ten Seconds Left - Get Those Acros In!***
<AlphaBot> Answer 3 received!
<AlphaBot> *** Voting Round! ***
<AlphaBot> Choose from the following responses:
<AlphaBot> Answer [1]: MeatWhiz Tastes Great!
<AlphaBot> Answer [2]: Mr T's Groovy
<AlphaBot> Answer [3]: my taco's green-->AlphaBot
2 AlphaBot-> Your vote for acronym 2 has been registered.
<AlphaBot> The votes were as follows:
<AlphaBot> Spam's answer of 'MeatWhiz Tastes Great!' received
2 votes!
<AlphaBot> SpooHead's answer of 'Mr T's Groovy' received 0
votes!
<AlphaBot> SpooHead received 2 speed answer points!
<AlphaBot> Futzy's answer of 'my tacos green' received 1 vote!
<AlphaBot> The following receive 3 bonus points: Spam
- In this short segment, players msg in their answers and votes
to the bot. The bot displays the results to the channel.
Players using multiple accounts or signons to cheat are not
appreciated. AlphaBot logs votes and this makes it easier
to identify cheaters. If you are caught cheating, people will
get very angry at you, and you may even be banned from the
game!
The points are added like this:
- Each time a player votes for your answer, you get one point.
- Each time you are the first player to give an answer, you
get two "speed" points. You only get these if you have less
than 26 points, however, so it is not possible to win a game
on speed points. You also can't change your answer once you've
received speed points.
- The person with the most votes per round get bonus points.
These are based on the length of the acronym. A 5 letter acronym
earns you five bonus points if you won the most votes. If two
or more people tie for "most votes", each will receive the bonus.
- If you don't vote but did submit an answer, you will lose
any bonus points that you might normally receive. We want you
to vote! (You can also vote even if you didn't submit an answer
with no penalty.)
- You lose one point if your answer is invalid and does not
match the characters given to you. But you can type in a new
answer before the time runs out.
Note: High scores are saved for each nickname. If you play
Alphabet Soup using different nicks, those scores cannot be combined!
The commands that AlphaBot recognizes are listed below. These
commands may be sent as a private message to AlphaBot (/msg
AlphaBot help), or stated publicly on the channel by adding
the word "alpha" in front of the command (alpha help):
