What are member profiles?
A member profile is a Web page that tells the rest of Talk City, and anyone else on the Web,
a bit about you. You can include a little information or a lot--it's up to you. You can include
a picture of yourself, some personal information, lists of your favorite things, photos, a blog,
and more! Before entering information into your profile, be sure to consult our
Safety Tips page. It can help you decide how much personal
information is appropriate to share.
Where is my profile?
You can access your profile by clicking on the "My Profile" link found on many pages in Talk City.
You can also launch your profile from the "My Profile" link found on your
My Rooms page. Links to your profile will
also appear in any chat room or message board you participate in.
How do I make changes to my profile?
When you are logged in to Talk City and viewing your profile, you'll see a "Manage Profile" tab at
the top of the page. Click it to enter your Profile Control Center. All of the tools you need to customize
your profile are in your Profile Control Center. Consult the help pages in the Control Center for
detailed instructions.
Who can see my member profile?
Your profile can be viewed by anyone on the Web. We've included powerful tools to allow you to
restrict access to certain parts of your profile if you wish. Complete information on this option is
available in the help pages in the Profile Control Center.
How can I find other people's profiles?
Whenever somebody enters a chat room or posts a message in a message board, a link to that
member's profile will appear. You can also browse through profiles or search them via the
member
directory.
Can I find people based on the information they've entered in their profile?
Yes. Enter your search terms at the top of the member
directory and check the "All Indexes" box to search for your terms anywhere in a member's profile,
or use the "Targeted Search" drop down to restrict the search to a certain part of the profile. For
example, if you wanted to find people who like pizza, you would enter "pizza"
in the text field and select "Food Item" from the drop-down.
Can I search on more than one part of a profile?
Yes. Go to the Advanced
Search page. You can enter multiple search terms and restrict your search to those with a profile
picture, males or females, members of a certain age, and/or those who use a certain type of messaging
system (like AIM).
Can I prevent my profile from appearing in the member directory?
Yes, you can do that in the Profile Control Center.
If I remove my profile from the member directory, will people still be able to see it?
Yes. When you participate in chat rooms and message boards, links to your profile appear.
How can I search for specific profiles?
There's a search option at the top of the member directory
page. You can search through all of a member's profile information, or specific parts. For example,
you could enter "Mark Twain" and select "Authors" from the drop-down menu.
What are "friends" and how do they end up on a profile?
If you're friendly with another Talk City member, you can ask that member to become friends with
you. If the other member accepts, you can each display each other's picture on your profile. You can
also grant your friends special access to part of your profile information.
What are those icons I see in the "Contact Information" portion of the profile?
Those icons indicate a member's presence in chat or their status with various messaging services. The
Talk City icon indicates whether or not a member is online in a chat room. If a member has entered account
information for messaging services, you may see this icon as well. For example, if you use AIM, you can
enter your AIM account information and display your AIM status to other members.
Can I prevent these presence icons from displaying on my profile?
Yes. You can hide the "Contact Information" module so that it doesn't appear on your profile.
I see that people can leave comments on other people's profiles by signing
the guestbook. Can anybody sign any member's guestbook?
Use of the guestbook function is limited to logged-in members who have been members of Talk City for
at least 24 hours. You can set up your guestbook so that you
can review comments before they become public and/or you can limit who can view your guestbook.
Am I notified if somebody signs my guestbook?
Yes, you'll receive an email notification.
Do profiles come with blogs?
Yes. All you need to do to create your blog is to log in to your Profile Control Center and create
it.
Do profiles come with photo albums?
Yes, every blog comes with photo albums. You can create as many as you wish.
Can I customize my profile?
Yes. You can move different sections to different parts of the page or eliminate them from the page
completely. You can also limit access to certain parts of the page if you wish.
How can I contact somebody via their profile?
Click on the Talk City icon under "Contact Information" and enter your message. If the member
you're trying to reach is online in chat, they'll get your message immediately. If they're offline,
they'll read your message the next time they log into their Profile Control Center.
I'm a WebTV user. Why am I having trouble using the profile pages?
Unfortunately, WebTV doesn't support the modern browser standards required to use Talk City member
profiles.
