Do I have to pay for IRC access?

Yes. You must become a Talk Citizen in order to access Talk City chat rooms via IRC. The Talk Citizen Basic subscription plan, which includes IRC access, is available for $7.77 per year. Click here to sign up.

How do I configure my IRC software to connect to Talk City?

See the instructions below for the following IRC clients:

  Pirch
  mIRC
  MICE iRC

Configuring Pirch

To log on you would use the following configuration:

(Example - please substitute with your own)
Click on "Login" and fill in the following information:

  • IRC network: TALKCITY
  • Server: Chat.Talkcity.com:6667;Talk City
  • Password: YourPassword
  • Name: JaneDoe
  • Email: JaneDoe@talkcity.com
    (yes, please use YourNick@talkcity.com)
  • Nickname: JaneDoe
Click Connect - you are now connecting.

 

Configuring mIRC

(These instructions are for mIRC Version 6.3)

mIRC is an IRC client for Windows written by Khaled Mardam-Bey. It is available at www.mirc.com. Talk City provides a link to this download and instructions on how to use this software as a convenience to our users. Talk City does not endorse this product, and is not liable for the consequences of your use of said product.

Install and launch mIRC and you'll see this window:

Enter in the information pictured above replacing "YourNick" with your Talk City nickname. Make sure you enter your email address as shown above, even though it's not your actual email address. Then click on the Servers option on the left.

You should now see this window:

Click "Add."

You should now see this window:

Enter the information you see pictured above making sure to leave the Group field blank and replacing "Your Password" with your actual Talk City password. Click Add.

You should now see this window:

Click Select.

You should now see this window:

Click "Connect to server"

A window entitled "mIRC Favorites" will pop up. Close it. You should now be connected to the chat server. Typing /list will load the chat room list.

Configuring MICE iRC

MICE iRC is an IRC client for Mac OS X available from MICE Products and can be downloaded here. Talk City provides a link to this download and instructions on how to use this software as a convenience to our users. Talk City does not endorse this product, and is not liable for the consequences of your use of said product.
  1. After downloading and installing the software, select File > Connect to server...
  2. Fill in the Connect window as shown below replacing "Nick" with your Talk City nickname
  3. irc

  4. Select a server to 'edit' or add one using the following info.
    • Server: chat.talkcity.com
    • Nickname: Your Talk City Nick
    • Real Name: Just put IRC
    • Email: YourTalkCityNick@Talkcity.com (yes please use @talkcity.com as Email)
  5. Click OK
  6. Click IRC > Preferences... > Servers
  7. irc

  8. Select TalkCity and click Edit.
  9. Preset Name: TalkCity
    Server: chat.talkcity.com
    Port 7000
    Password: Your Password
    Nick: Your Talk City Nick
    Alt Nick: Nick_2
    Real Name: IRC
    E-mail: TalkCityNick@TalkCity.com (yes please use @talkcity.com as Email)

    Perform on connect tips. Perform option saves you time by performing commands on connect.

    Sample:

    Check 'Auto reconnect' and press Okay.

    Click the connect icon (top left) -- You should now be connecting to Talk City! Once connected type /list for a list of rooms or type /join #roomname.
